Weekday Names

word:en:weekday_names

The days of the week are named for the seven 'planets' and their gods: Sun-day, Moon-day, and then the five wanderers. Latin kept the gods (Saturn's day), the Romance tongues still do (mardi for Mars, vendredi for Venus); the Germanic peoples swapped in their own — Tiw, Woden, Thor, and Frigg — for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus. The sky's wanderers still rule the calendar.
