al-Qāʾid, 'the leader' — the star at the end of the Dipper's handle, leader of the banāt naʿsh, the 'daughters of the bier': for the old Arabs these seven stars were not a Bear at all, but a coffin followed by mourning women. The source of the star-name Alkaid.
