A partridge, a monkey, and an elephant, living under a great banyan, fall to disputing who is eldest and so most deserving of respect. By recalling the size of the tree in their earliest memories, they find the partridge is oldest; thereafter they honor one another by seniority and live in harmony, and their concord becomes known far and wide.
