In 1838 Bessel measured the tiny yearly shift of the star 61 Cygni and found its distance — the first proof that the stars are other suns, unthinkably far. The heroes, beasts, and gods the myths fixed in the sky are suns scattered across light-years, each a Sun to worlds we cannot see.
