On All Saints' Day, 1755, a great earthquake struck Lisbon, then a tsunami, then fire, killing tens of thousands. The shock ran through Europe's mind as much as its ground: it drove Voltaire and the philosophers to ask anew how a good God could allow such ruin, and it helped found the science of earthquakes. — history
