Hippocratic Prognosis

sci:history:hippocratic_prognosis

Hippocrates turned the healer from a reader of omens into a reader of the body: the 'sacred disease', epilepsy, he declared no more sacred than any other, having a natural cause; and he taught physicians the art of prognosis, to follow an illness and foretell its critical days. Disease became a natural course to be predicted, not a god's arrow to be appeased. — history of medicine
