The Sun hurls out great flares and storms of charged particles. The Carrington Event of 1859 lit auroras as far as the tropics and set telegraph wires sparking; and the rings of old trees record even mightier blasts in the years 774 and 993, when blood-red skies were seen and written into the chronicles.
