Germanium (Ge): metalloid; used in fibre optic cables (as GeO2 dopant), infrared optics (night-vision, thermal imaging), and thin-film solar cells (multi-junction); byproduct of zinc smelting and coal combustion residues. China produces ~60%; imposed export controls in 2023.
