The Dogon of Mali centre their cosmology and the great Sigui ceremony on Sirius, called Sigi tolo, and speak of a small dense companion, po tolo. A widely popularised claim that this preserves ancient knowledge of the white-dwarf Sirius B is rejected by most scholars, who trace the detail to twentieth-century contact; the cultural importance of the tradition, however, is well attested. — Dogon star-lore
