Divergent boundary: plates pull apart; produces mid-ocean ridges where new seafloor is created by upwelling basaltic magma (e.g. Mid-Atlantic Ridge); on continents produces rift valleys (e.g. East African Rift); shallow earthquakes and effusive volcanism.
