Eshu (Eshu-Elegbara; Legba in Vodou, Eleguá in Santería) — the divine messenger of Yoruba tradition and its diaspora, who carries words and offerings between humans and the Orishas, and keeps the crossroads, the thresholds, and the gateways of chance and language. A tester and boundary-keeper — not, as colonial missionaries wrongly cast him, a devil.
